The trios for clarinet, cello and piano of Beethoven and Brahms are amongst the most original of the two composers' works. Composed almost a century apart (1798 et 1891) they are both virtuoso pieces, with a particularly expressive central movement and marked by their Romantic character, early in the case of Beethoven, aged 28 at the time, and full-blown in the case of Brahms by the age of 58. These Trios also achieve an extraordinary marriage of timbres between three instruments with a very different sound production, which caused a friend of Brahms to say that "the instruments are in love with one another".
